Time Capsule! Mine Might Smell

Where objects travel the long way but you get travel back in time. Mentally of course.

When I think about things to put in a time capsule I imagine they'd be things current to me now so as to remind my future-self who she was.

I took awful quality pictures to show you what I'd put in my time capsule to be opened up in ten years time.

First, I think I'd put in my copy of Tales of Beedle The Bard in the time capsule. To remind myself in the future that I loved fairytales, Harry Potter, fantasy, stuff like that. Just in case I forget somewhere, which I really hope that I don't.

Also because I know that right now I could read and read forever. If I could just go live in an unending library I'd do so.

Second I think I would put in my graduation certificate from Witch's Rock Surf School. We got them at the end of our week spent there in Costa Rica, it was a fantastic place and the instructors were very helpful.

They spelled my name wrong on it, but it's still a memory of the school surf trip there. And the certificate, if you can read it, is quite humorous.

Thirdly I'd put in this bottle of possible-agricultural-virus containing sand that customs probably wouldn't have allowed into the country if they found it, from Costa Rica as well. Also from the surf trip.

I want to remind my future-self that she loved to travel and itched at any change to get on a plane and that I jumped at every opportunity to leave the country. I hope that I'm still traveling and maybe even living overseas ten years from now.

Next I'm tucking away my skating boot.  I'm getting new ones so I won't be missing it long. But up until now I've been skating at Charles Moore Arena for just over twelve years. I'll be leaving for Wheaton in August and I haven't totally figured out the rink situation out there yet. I hope I still skate ten years from now, even as just a hobby with significant loss of fitness.

But future me would probably like to remember the good old days.


The boot is foul smelling, I'm hypothetically glad to be hypothetically rid of it.

Next, I'd put in this metal hair-wrap I got at King Richard's Faire. I love dressing up and I love events like King Richard's Faire, it's one of my favourite times of the year.

Hopefully future me still appreciates the fun of those events and activities, I know they're definitely a part of my life currently.

And last but not least...

I'd put in one of my Amy Pond shoes. Because I'm a cosplayer, I love Doctor Who, and Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica and others in sci-fi, I love cons and the people who go to them. I love the community of the fandom and all awesome people get up to over it.

I may or may not be involved later, a lot can happen in ten years. I can only hope I'm still involved and loving it. Maybe I'll move up in cosplay skills and this will remind my future-self where it all started and all the fellow fans she met and fun she had. And then get her back into it if she ever stopped.

Those are all the items I'd put into my time capsule. All of it has a purpose to remind myself who I was, what I love and the best memories I have/had. Hopefully I won't have forgotten and they'll just be nostalgia for when everything started.

WELL THEN, BLOGGER

BLOGGER, WHAT DID YOU DO?

YOU'RE SCARING ME.

Hey guys, I think blogger changed, it scared me silly when I logged in, I had no idea where I was supposed to go for a few minutes. But I survived.

We forgot to choose another theme for this week. Therefore I shall ramble for a couple of paragraphs.

First subject: Anime Boston 2012

Earlier this month was AB12 and I was a little sad because I didn't get to cosplay my Weeping Angel, nor was I capable of eating due to still having my jaw wired from surgery, but I did get to cosplay Amy Pond! I was her for the whole weekend, I actually want to dye my hair ginger now, not just because it would help for a far more accurate cosplay of her, but also because I really like red hair.

So I cosplayed her outfit from Time of Angels and I thought for a while no one would recognize me until some guy turned around and shouted "Come along, Pond!" and then my weekend began.

I went to the Saturday BBC photoshoot and it was full of whovians and sherlockians, it was fantastic. Some photos got reblogged on Tumblr too, http://doctorwho.tumblr.com/post/20697940769/anime-boston-bbc-meetup-canthisgetanyworse. I was not paying any attention for the ones I'm in here (was asking someone to move my bag I think), but you can probably see others that I'm tagged in on facebook. I should really upload mine. One of my friends was cosplaying the sixth doctor and we ran into two weeping angels and he decided to push me at them all I could think with that was "Doctor, you're supposed to be saving me from the angels, not throwing me in the ring with them!" It was so much fun.

Next year I plan to cosplay Restac and I'm starting my planning early this time because the difficulty level has upped significantly.

I'm going to try and get as accurate as possible so I've been researching the methods used on the show in order to try and duplicate them to the best of my ability.

Also I've been reading like crazy lately. It turns out that reading is an awful habit for me as I never get anything done. But I have missed reading like crazy, I feel like I haven't had time in over two years, which is true. So I can't wait for the summer to be able to read constantly. I've got quite a list of books I need to read. But I also need money in order to purchase books so I think I'll be applying for a job at the Barnes & Noble on Cape. I can't think of a better summer job.

Finally, I've just decided today on which college I'll be attending. I've decided to go to Wheaton College in Norton, MA. It's not that far from where I live, about two hours I think? Not as far as I'd like and I plan to try and transfer into MHC or Smith at one point but Wheaton is a really great place and I'm pretty excited to go. I didn't really have much of a choice, they gave me so much aid that my mother said I'd have to pay my own way if I wanted to go anywhere else. So it's probably a good thing I like Wheaton. It's nice to be certain about next year, a really big relief and now I can focus on just getting through the rest of the year (graduation on June 3rd). I'm both excited and nervous about living away from home and especially the idea of a roommate.

Well This is getting really long so I'm going to cut off awkwardly without any really closure to anything mentioned. Especially this paragraph.

Moist von Lipwig

I'm a reaaaally big fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. It spans almost 40 books at this point, but I love that you can hop in at basically any point. I happen to get most of the books from the library, and I love that as I go along when I see mentions of other characters I get to be like "ooh! ooh! I know them!".

I also really like that while the entire series parodies a whole bunch of topics, it's still original. It's not like the Scary Movie franchise or other comparable parodies where people just yank scenes from well-known books/movies, mash them all together, throw in some curse words and yell "look! It's funny!"

There are many recurring characters, loosely compiled into their affiliations either with the country witches (who do more psychology than witchcraft) or the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork, who can be no less slimy than the people they arrest.

I just finished a story arc about a relatively new character, Moist von Lipwig; a con artist who is hung under his alias, but the (benevolent?) dictator Vetinari uses a trap door to keep him alive. In both Going Postal and Making Money Moist is commissioned to take over defunct and poorly running government offices - the Post Office and Royal Bank, respectively. Moist is different from the other characters we've met, with a taste for adrenaline and flair for the ridiculous, and all sorts of shenanigans ensue.

I would say more, but I don't want to give spoilers :)

It's been great reading about all of your guys' favorite books this week!

Starting off the summer

So I'm going to be honest here, I'm pretty brain-dead at this point - I've spent all week in eight hour training sessions for my new job, and all my coherent skills are pretty worn out.

But! I would like to tell you about my new job :) I'm really excited about it - it's working with kids with autism to alter their behavior (teaching appropriate behaviors to replace inappropriate ones - i.e. hitting - and teaching life skills) with the overall goal of helping them become independent (as much as possible). In other words: helping people learn to function on their own and work and interact with others.

Probably sounds a bit dry, and there's certainly a whole lot of data taking and knowledge to learn, but I'm really excited to start work in the field. I don't know quite when that is yet (probably in a week or two), but I have four kids to work with, and a whole lot to learn. But I guess that keeps life interesting, so I don't already know everything.

Now, I realize that isn't particularly interesting for anyone else, so now I have a question for you guys:

What would you recommend for a summer reading list? I need to find some good books to read; I'm already working through Terry Pratchett's books, I've read all but Looking for Alaska of John's books, and I have Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series on my list, but I'm drawing up a blank otherwise.
